No, I'm not a tzaddik,
just a regular yid.
In some ways mature,
in some still a kid.
So forgive me for teachin'
what I'm tryin' to learn -
to give of myself completely
with nothin' in return.
The nature of the Lord
is only to give to one and all.
He has no need of anyone
or anything at all.
And the purpose for man
is to forget about reward,
to help others all we can,
and so to imitate the Lord.
Well, a funny thing
's the way it's all set -
the more you give,
the more you get.
And a simple method
removes all doubt -
give a tenth of what you've got,
God says to test him out.
Now, you think I'm a sucker,
naive, a little dumb -
to give to every beggar,
to chat with any bum.
Well, you're right to use reason,
but the heart must be your guide -
are you searchin' how t' give,
or watchin' your own hide.
So in every deed,
take a look; go inside.
Are you fearing the future?
Are you acting from pride?
If you give up the selfish;
if not to give is to die -
your reward is the joy of
havin' God by your side.
